The Brain Awareness Centre was founded in 2023 by Jo Stevens, Alyssa Goldman & Sam Gordon who recognized the need for a local organization dedicated to helping those affected by Acquired Brain injury inspired by their own experiences.
Since then, The Brain Awareness Centre has worked consistently to raise awareness on this often 'hidden' condition through social events and speaking publically with the aim of educating and encouraging greater acceptance and understanding of those who live with a brain injury.
While at the core are Jo, Alyssa & Sam, The Brain Awareness Centre is supported by its members and volunteers who bring various skills and life experiences that support the work we do.
We are proud to link in with and promote local organizations that provide the best possible support for those living with or impacted by a brain injury. Our focus is in the Metro North area of Moreton Bay City, with a radius of 50km from Caboolture.
Our mission is to be a source of comfort, support and nurture for anyone affected by Acquired Brain Injury regardless of how it happened.
We want to be the reason a brain injured person finds the strength and courage to create a meaningful and dignified life despite the challenges.
We aim to provide a safe place for the brain injured community, their carers and support workers to be listened to and valued.
We are committed to being a place that will be known for its ability to give constant and consistent support in the pursuit of what is right, just and meaningful in the Brain Injured Community.
Currently, we host regular morning teas, have monthly display tables in our local libraries, and attend forums and community events to raise awareness of the impact brain injuries have on individuals and the community. We do not provide medical advice, we speak from personal experiences living with a brain injury.
Since we began in 2023, we have had the pleasure of connecting with many individuals in our community, contributing to their positive mental health and well-being by creating a space that is supportive and encouraging to those recovering from an acquired brain injury and their careers. By speaking with groups in our community, we are continuing to raise awareness regarding the needs of those with brain injuries - namely patience, empathy and understanding.

‘To the world you might just be one person – but to one person you might be the world’
The Brain Awareness Centre has one purpose – to change the negative perception of what it means to have an Acquired Brain Injury, and to create and promote a culture of acceptance that the ‘one ‘is just as important and has a place in our society as the many.
Every Acquired Brain Injury not only affects an individual, but it also impacts families which eventually ripples out into our community and changes how we interact with each other.
The vision we see before us is to be the place where the seeds of hope will be planted, that the challenges faced can be overcome and a renewed vigor and purpose for life can be found through positive experiences during rehabilitation and reintegration back into a new version of life following a brain injury.
The Brain Awareness Centre endeavors to achieve the goal of positive perception through education of what it is to have a brain injury by assisting each individual survivor, their family, their carers and support workers with their specific needs. It is leading by example of determination, never giving up and believing in your place in a community, that a new life can be built.
